Fairfield, CT and Westchester and eastern Putnam, NY are a region of great affluence, dense human populations, and progressive conservation efforts , set amidst a landscape of rocky ledges and elongated, glacially carved hills. Development is heaviest along the coast and in northern and eastern Fairfield County, but is considerably lighter in the middle of the region. Centered around the CT towns of Redding, Weston, and Easton, some 15,000 acres of oak-hardwood and hemlock forest have been conserved, while in New York, some 22,000 acres of land have been protected in the towns of Lewisboro, Pound Ridge, and North Salem.
This subregion is also home to one of the most spectacular remnant old-growth forests in the southern New England-Eastern New York region - the Mianus River Gorge Preserve in Bedford, New York. http://travel.nytimes.com/2006/10/06/travel/escapes/06trip.html?pagewanted=all
