Communications Specialist – Highstead

Highstead Foundation seeks a full-time, strategic-minded, deadline-oriented communications specialist with 3- 5 years of experience to help build a vibrant community of conservation-minded people in New England.

About Highstead

Highstead is a regional non-profit organization dedicated to conserving the New England landscape and to advancing the Wildlands and Woodlands Vision by partnering with, and promoting, the efforts of other organizations and agencies. The vision was developed at Harvard University, embraced by Highstead and has evolved into an initiative supported by a range of conservation-minded organizations.

The Role

The Communications Specialist will be responsible for working as part of a small communications team planning, writing and editing content for web and social platforms, tracking analytics and developing and implementing an SEO strategy.

This position reports to the Director, Strategic Communications and will offer the candidate an opportunity to gain experience with communications strategy and planning as well as the launch of a new website.


The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years of full-time experience in a corporate communications, social media or PR role. Impeccable writing, editing, planning and proofreading skills across a range of traditional and social media are essential. Candidates should have hands-on experience planning, creating, executing and measuring the effectiveness of website and blog copy, and social media campaigns. A solid understanding of data analytics across platforms and a working knowledge of SEO are required. Experience with WordPress, Google Analytics, a social media planning tool like Hoot Suite, and a comfort level with PowerPoint, In-Design and photoshop are also required. Video editing, podcast production and media relations experience a plus.

Candidates should hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree in communications, public relations, writing or a related field or equivalent experience. Experience in a non-profit and/or conservation-related organization preferred.

The engagement will begin as a full-time remote position, but the expectation is to return to in-person work in our beautiful Redding, CT, offices within a year. Highstead offers a competitive salary and benefits package.
