Explore Highstead’s landscape while learning about the monarch butterfly’s plight due to habitat loss and pesticides. Local lepidopterist and Yale Peabody Museum curatorial affiliate Victor DeMasi will lead the walk and share how to spot other local fauna, including butterflies and moths. He’ll point out host plants for specific butterfly species.

Dragonfly expert John McLeran, who has conducted a dragonfly population study on Highstead property for the past dozen years, will lead the walk to observe and identify dragonflies. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars. If you don’t know how to use binoculars for dragonfly viewing, come 30 minutes early for a lesson.

DeMasi will discuss trends in Connecticut’s butterfly population and how to attract butterflies to your backyard. Specimens from the Peabody Museum’s butterfly collection will be on display. Please meet promptly at 10 a.m. at the Highstead Barn.
